A Sweet Welcome Back: Creating a Treat-Themed Bulletin Board for Students

There’s something special about walking into a school at the beginning of a new year. The hallways are quiet, classrooms are being prepared, and there’s a sense of excitement about all the possibilities ahead. As a Wellness Coach, I wanted to create a welcome-back display that would immediately make students smile and let them know that they are valued, welcomed, and an important part of our school community, and I wanted it to be FUN!

So, I decided to make this year’s welcome-back bulletin board extra sweet! 🍭🍪🍬

The theme came together around the idea:

“It’s Going to Be a Sweet Year!”

I wanted the display to feel less like a traditional bulletin board and more like a giant treat shop that students could walk past and enjoy. Bright colors, oversized treats, a cheerful ice cream shop mascot, and lots of three-dimensional elements helped bring the whole idea to life.

🍦 Bringing the Sweet Shop to Life

One of my favorite parts of creating school displays is figuring out how to make everything feel larger than life. For this board, I created oversized candy and treats, including giant lollipops, colorful candy pieces, chocolate, and cookies.

The cookies were especially fun because they added a little bit of realism to the display. I wanted students to do a double-take as they walked by!

The giant striped awning across the top helped transform the bulletin board into a little candy shop. It also added height and dimension, making the display stand out in the hallway.

🍭 Adding 3D Details

Flat bulletin boards are great, but I love adding elements that literally pop off the wall!

The oversized treats were positioned at different depths to create a more immersive display. The lollipops extend outward, the cookies appear to sit on the display, and the large chocolate bar and candy pieces help create the feeling that students are looking into an actual sweet shop.

These little details are what make students stop, look, and talk about the display—and that interaction is exactly what I hoped for.

🐯 A Friendly Face to Welcome Students

The cheerful ice cream shop tiger became the perfect centerpiece. He adds personality and gives the board a fun, welcoming character.

Rather than simply saying “Welcome Back,” I wanted the display to communicate something a little more meaningful:

We’re happy you’re here.
You belong here.
And we’re going to have a great year together.

💗 More Than Just Decoration

As a Wellness Coach, I think a school environment can have a powerful impact on how students feel.

A colorful hallway display may seem like a small thing, but those little moments matter. A student walking into school on the first day might be nervous, excited, unsure, or simply wondering what the new year will bring. Seeing something playful, bright, and welcoming can be one small reminder that school is a place where they are wanted.

My goal with school displays is always to create something that sparks joy, curiosity, conversation, and a sense of belonging.

This candy-themed board was definitely a labor of love, but seeing students stop to look at the treats, point things out to one another, and smile makes every minute of creating it worthwhile.

🍬 A Sweet Start to the Year

A new school year is a fresh beginning filled with opportunities to learn, grow, make friends, try new things, and discover strengths we didn't know we had.

And if this bulletin board can help students walk through the hallway with even the tiniest bit more excitement about what's ahead, then I’d say it did its job.

Keep Them Reading All Summer!

 

Summer Slice: A Pizza-Themed Summer Reading Program Bringing Families Back Into School

Looking for a creative summer reading program that encourages literacy, family engagement, and community partnerships?

One of the most successful programs we implemented at our elementary school was called Summer Slice. Through a partnership with a local pizza restaurant, students were invited to visit the school media center throughout the summer, check out books, write book reviews, and earn a free pizza.

The program was simple to run, affordable, and created an exciting reason for students and families to stay connected to reading throughout the summer months.

The Goal

Like many schools, we wanted to combat the "summer slide" and help students continue reading while school was out.

We also wanted families to:

• Visit the school during summer break

• Access library books

• Maintain reading habits

• Stay connected to the school community

The Summer Slice program accomplished all of these goals while creating excitement around reading.

How the Program Worked

The school media center was open several days throughout the summer for families to visit.

Students could:

1. Check out books from the school library.

2. Read a book at home.

3. Complete a simple book review.

4. Return the review during a summer library session.

5. Receive a free pizza from our community partner.

The concept was simple.

Students quickly connected reading with a fun reward, and the pizza theme made the program easy to promote.

Why This Program Was Successful

Community Partnership

A local pizza restaurant partnered with the school to support literacy.

Many local businesses are eager to support schools and families. While we partnered with a pizza restaurant, this concept could easily work with:

• Local pizzerias

• Ice cream shops

• Bookstores

• PTO/PTA organizations

• Community foundations

• Local businesses looking to support education

Family Engagement

Families appreciated having a reason to visit the school during the summer months. It provided structure, encouraged reading, and helped students maintain a connection to their school community.

Student Motivation

Let's be honest—pizza gets attention.

Students were excited to earn their reward and often returned multiple times throughout the summer to participate.

Display and Promotion

To build excitement, we created posters and promotional materials using a pizza theme.

The message was simple.
